The Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks is pleased to announce the recipients of The 2012 Developing Community Arts Grants Awarded to Cultural Not- for-Profit Organizations in Essex and Southern Franklin Counties.
The Awards Ceremony for DCA Recipients is March 16, 2012 at The Lake Placid Center for the Arts during the Opening for the Cover Art Exhibit from 5 -7. The Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks will award $25,180 for twenty arts and culturally related projects taking place in Essex and Southern Franklin Counties during 2012, through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Decentralization Program. This program, also called Developing Community Arts (DCA) Grants Administrated by ACNA in Essex and Southern Franklin counties, distributes State art funds and encourages local involvement in funding decisions affecting community cultural organizations and programs. Art and cultural organizations, libraries, youth groups, towns, service groups, and other local non-profit groups offering artistic or cultural services or programs to residents of Essex or southern Franklin Counties were all eligible to apply. DCA funding is available to support quality, professional level arts activities benefiting the public in theater, dance, music, film, video, literature, visual arts, museums, and historical/cultural activities or art workshops held for the benefit of the general public. Individual artists may apply through a non-profit sponsor.

The DCA Grant Program is a re-grant program of the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program and is administered by the Arts Council for the Northern Adirondacks. The Decentralization Program was begun in 1977 in accordance with its mandate from the Legislature to encourage participation in the State’s cultural funding process at the local level and implemented in this region in 1988. Decentralization funding for local arts activities is available in all of the state’s counties and remains one of NYSCA’s most dynamic means of making arts and cultural programs available to diverse segments of the state’s population.
Of the applicants receiving funding there were three new applicants, which included five artist-initiated projects. A panel of seven regional Essex and Southern Franklin county residents who are respected professionals in their fields; including artists, art administrators, and others whom reflect a broad-based representation of the cultural needs of our communities evaluated the project proposals. The ACNA Board of Trustees approved the panel’s recommendations. All requests to the Decentralization Program are intended to serve and benefit local residents and are open to public attendance and/or participation.
